2008: A Sea-Change Election?

Greenberg Quinlan Rosner & Campaign For America's Future
March 12, 2008 from US Politics > Ideas for Democrats

Executive Summary

One week ahead of the annual Take Back America Conference, Campaign for America’s Future’s co-director, Robert Borosage and Greenberg Quinlan Rosner’s Stan Greenberg teamed up to talk to reporters about the current political climate and the state of the election.

According to a CAF report released to the press - and analysis conducted by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner - conditions are present for a sea-change election in November 2008. American voters are saying they are ready to end the conservative era that has dominated American politics over the past three decades, and launch a new era of progressive reform by picking up new majorities in both Houses of Congress and taking back the White House.

Key Findings

  • Political and economic indicators suggest that this year’s election is setting up to be one of the most defining elections in decades - perhaps resembling election of 1980 more than 1992.
  • Recent findings from GQR and other public polling firms suggest that voters are making an ideological shift and aligning with progressives on the issues. They want to see increased support for public programs through more government involvement, a government that cares about people, and a balance between choice and security.
  • Voters also are expressing their discontent with the direction in which the country is going, saying they are ready for bold policy changes on issues like health care, the war in Iraq, and global warming.

"Political and economic indicators suggest that this year’s election is setting up to be one of the most defining elections in decades - perhaps resembling the bitter election of 1980 more than 1992."
