Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Congratulates Romanian President Basescu on his Re-election

Bucharest, Romania. December 15, 2009. Greenberg Quinlan Rosner congratulates President Traian Basescu of Romania on his reelection on December 6. Basescu, who came to office in 2004, received 50.33 percent of the vote in a runoff, after receiving 32.44 percent in the first round on November 22.

Romania has been hit hard by the economic downturn and remains troubled by corruption in the public and private sector. Voters reelected Basescu to another term, recognizing him as the candidate most capable of navigating Romania through the economic crisis and implementing the difficult but necessary economic and political reforms to take Romania forward.

On November 22, Romania also held a public referendum, proposed by President Basescu, to reduce the parliament from 471 to 300 members, as part of his on-going political reform and anti-corruption efforts. The referendum passed with 88.8 percent of the vote, an indication of broad support for Basescu’s path on this issue, despite the divided presidential election results.
